Department: Stepdown / Progressive Care Unit
Care Setting: Acute Care Hospital

Charting System: EPIC

Position Details

• Shift Length: 12 hours
• Schedule:
  • Days: 0630–1900
• Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours/week
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: 1 major + 1 minor
• Orientation:
  • 1 unit-specific 12-hour shift
  • Open-book skills exam on Friday of orientation
  • 90% required to pass – failure results in contract termination

Unit Information

• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
• Support Staff: Nurse Aides/PCTs (1:10 ratio)
• Charge Nurse: Yes (takes full patient assignment)

Patient Population

• Heart failure
• Atrial fibrillation
• Respiratory distress
• Stroke

Clinical Responsibilities

• Titrate cardiac drips ✅
  • Common drips: Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitroglycerin
• Telemetry monitoring – RNs must read and interpret their own strips
• CPAP management (troubleshooting only)
• May float to ICU if experienced and competent

Required Experience & Education

• Minimum: 2 years RN experience (Stepdown/PCU preferred)
• License: Active RN license (required at submission)
• BSN: Not required

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)

Compliance Requirements (READ CAREFULLY)

• Employment Restriction:
  • Cannot have worked FT/PT/PRN for Common Spirit, CHI, or Dignity Health within the past year
• Fingernail Policy:
  • Artificial nails are strictly prohibited in patient care areas
  • Refusal to remove nails = termination of contract
• RTO Policy:
  • All requested time off must be submitted upfront
  • No additional RTO approved after submission
